Join us Mondays from 3:30-4:30 PM for a free songwriting workshop to expand your knowledge of the basics of songwriting, led by Cathy DeWitt, international award-winning songwriter, music teacher at local private schools for 20 years, Musician in Residence with UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine, and host of the Across the Prairie and Healing Journeys Through Music radio programs.
StorySongs offers the opportunity to learn about and experience songwriting in your own words, fostering reminiscence, creative activity, and community.
About StorySongs
Open to anyone in the community age 55 and over, StorySongs offers a chance to share memories and stories in a supportive and respectful group environment, and participate in the process of transforming stories into songs.
Featuring creative writing, memory sharing, social interaction, fun, sense of accomplishment and community, singing optional!
The first part of the class is spent writing, often based on a theme or a suggestion from group members. Individuals share their writing and the facilitator guides discussion about types, styles, and formats of songs. Should it be fast or slow, upbeat or melancholy, major or minor? Does it have structure, or is it more free form? With input from the group, the facilitator may tweak the words or make lines into stanzas, then create a melody.
