Jernie Millán has called Gainesville home for the last 2.5 years by deeply immersing herself in the artistic threads of this community. After graduating with a Bachelor of Music from Middle Tennessee State University, she began her career at the Barbershop Harmony Society, an international non-profit organization specializing in bringing the joy of singing to all through contests, festivals, funding, and music education. As their marketing specialist, Jernie supported the organization through ‘Everyone in Harmony,’ a strategic vision initiative transition from an exclusive all-male organization to one that is inclusive of all people.
Personally, Jernie is a seasoned vocalist and songwriter for nearly two decades. Blending jazz, pop, and funk sounds, her songwriting connects listeners from a wide range of backgrounds. Jernie released her debut EP, ‘Different Sun,’ in May 2023 as a recipient of the Music GNV recording grant. She performs in and around Florida.
Why Arts in Medicine?
Very simply, art – and specifically music – has been a constant in my ever-changing life. It wasn’t until I was living through some of the darkest times in my life that I realized the transformative healing power of art and collaboration. As an advocate for mental health and understanding the lack of healthcare access – especially to marginalized people – one of my main goals as Community Arts Coordinator is to highlight our collective creativity, uplift the incredible work that is already taking place, and the work we can do to heal each other in community.
