Music in the Clinical Setting

Inpatient Music Visits

Musicians in Residence are professional musicians from the community who are specially trained to provide musical experiences to patients at the bedside. Visits from a musician in residence can include performances of specifically requested songs, the musicians’ original works, or a calming background melody. The patient and the musician have the ability to mutually guide the visit based on the patient’s requests and condition. Musician referrals can be made for current inpatients by calling Arts in Medicine at (352) 733-0880 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 9am-5pm, and Wednesday 12pm-5pm.

Music in Hospital Lobbies

In order to further enrich our hospitals' connection to the arts, musicians can often be seen performing music at a variety of locations throughout the hospital. They can be heard playing guitars, orchestral instruments, the lobby mini grand pianos, and more to provide visitors and staff a soothing and enjoyable music experience.

Songwriting Sessions

In a collaboration between patients, musicians, and writers, our team helps craft the words and musical tastes of patients into songs, giving patients an opportunity to explore their interest in songwriting and provide them a completed song they can take with them. Consultation requests for songwriting sessions can be placed through clinical staff using EPIC or by calling Arts in Medicine at (352) 733-0880.
