In response to a parent’s concern over long wait times for outpatient surgery, artists set up a visual arts and crafts table three days a week in the Ambulatory Waiting area for pediatric patients. These activities serve as a distraction for kids who have been unable to eat since the night before and are nervous about their upcoming procedure. This also allows the parents time to focus on pre-surgical instructions from their health care team. The success of this program has prompted expansion to other hospital and clinical locations.
